Description
Van Gogh’s Potato Planting, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1884, this shows peasants at work planting a broad, dark field with potatoes, bent to the shared labour under a wide sky with a village behind. Van Gogh admired the toil of the country people on the land and painted it without sentiment, in the heavy browns and earthy greens of his Dutch period; the labouring figures and open field give the scene a rooted, monumental strength.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the working figures and earthy field keep the weight of the original.
Where a working scene belongs
Its dark, earthy tones suit a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and pair well with wood and warm light.
