Description
Van Gogh’s The Old Tower of Nuenen with People Walking, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1884, this shows the old, crumbling church tower rising above the fields, with small figures walking the path below under a wide sky. Van Gogh was deeply attached to this ruined tower, which he saw as a symbol of the old peasant faith and the passing of generations; here the dark stone, bare land and tiny walkers are worked in the sober earth tones of his Dutch period with a grave, elegiac feeling.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the old tower and earthy tones keep the mood of the original.
Where a country scene belongs
Its sober, earthy tones suit a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and pair well with wood and warm light.
