Description
Van Gogh’s The New Church and Old Houses in The Hague, hand-painted in oil
Painted at The Hague in 1882, this early cityscape shows the tower of the Nieuwe Kerk rising above a huddle of old red rooftops under a soft grey sky. One of the first oils Van Gogh made as he taught himself to paint the city, it is worked in the sober browns, reds and greys of his early years with a plain, careful realism, an honest, atmospheric glimpse of the old Dutch town.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the church tower and old rooftops keep the mood of the original.
Where a city view belongs
Its soft, earthy tones suit a study, a hallway or a living room, and pair well with wood and considered interiors.
