Description
Van Gogh’s Portrait of Pere Tanguy, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Paris in 1887, this warm portrait shows Julien ‘Père’ Tanguy, the kindly Montmartre paint-seller who befriended and supplied the young avant-garde. He sits four-square, hands folded, against a wall of the brightly coloured Japanese prints Van Gogh loved. One of his best-loved portraits, it glows with fresh colour and affection, blending Western portraiture with the flat, vivid patterns of Japanese art.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the kindly sitter and bright prints keep the warmth of the original.
Where a portrait belongs
Warm and iconic, it suits a study, a living room or a hallway, and works beautifully against neutral or darker walls.
