Painted at Asnières outside Paris in 1887, this bright riverside shows a floating laundry boat, a bateau-lavoir, moored on the shimmering Seine, with the bank and trees beyond. Van Gogh spent that spring and summer painting the sunlit river alongside his Impressionist and Pointillist friends; here the sparkling water and light air are built from small, separate touches of fresh colour, calm and full of sun.
