Description
Van Gogh’s Three Pairs of Shoes, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Paris in 1886, this striking still life ranges three pairs of worn, heavy leather shoes together against a dark ground. Van Gogh painted old shoes several times, drawn to the whole life of hard walking and work worn into the cracked, misshapen leather; here the battered forms are modelled in deep browns and greys with a grave, almost portrait-like attention, humble objects made monumental.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the worn shoes and earthy tones keep the character of the original.
Where a still life belongs
Characterful and grave, it suits a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and pairs well with wood and warm light.
