Description
Van Gogh’s Portrait of Alexander Reid, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Paris in 1887, this portrait shows Alexander Reid, the young Scottish art dealer who shared lodgings with Van Gogh and Theo and whose red hair and beard were said to resemble Vincent’s own. Painted in the fresh, broken colour of his Paris years, the sitter’s pale face and russet hair ring against a vivid ground, a lively, affectionate portrait of a friend.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the fresh colour and steady gaze keep the presence of the original.
Where a portrait belongs
Direct and characterful, it suits a study, a living room or a hallway, and works beautifully against neutral or darker walls.
