Description
Van Gogh’s The Seated Zouave, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles in 1888, this bold portrait shows a Zouave, a soldier of the French North African regiments, seated in his brilliant uniform of red trousers and blue braided jacket against a coloured ground. Van Gogh was thrilled by the sitter’s vivid dress and dark features, and set the strong reds, blues and greens ringing against each other in a portrait of tremendous colour and presence.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the bright uniform and strong colour keep the presence of the original.
Where a bold portrait belongs
Vivid and striking, it makes a statement in a living room, a study or a hallway, and works well against neutral or darker walls.
