Description
Van Gogh’s The Railway Bridge over Avenue Montmajour, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles in 1888, this shows the great arched railway viaduct striding across the Avenue Montmajour, with a couple of small figures walking beneath the massive stone arches in the bright southern light. Van Gogh was interested in the bold, modern engineering of the railway; here the pale stone arches, blue sky and strong shadows are worked in firm strokes and clear colour, a striking, modern city scene.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the great arches and clear colour keep the character of the original.
Where a city scene belongs
Its clear, sunny tones suit a study, a hallway or a living room, and pair well with wood and considered interiors.
