Description
Van Gogh’s Still Life, Bloaters on Yellow Paper, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles in early 1889, this bold little still life lays a pair of bloaters, smoked herrings, on a sheet of bright yellow paper against a warm ground. The humble kipper was a traditional painter’s subject and a wry emblem of the poor artist’s meal; here Van Gogh sets the silvery-orange fish ringing against the vivid yellow in strong, direct strokes, a small, striking study of colour and light.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the fish and bright yellow keep the character of the original.
Where a still life belongs
Bold and warm, it suits a kitchen, a dining room or a study, and pairs well with wood and warm light.
