Description
Van Gogh’s Half-Figure of an Angel, after Rembrandt, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889, this is Van Gogh’s coloured ‘translation’ of a detail from a work by Rembrandt, the old master he revered. A gentle angel, seen half-length, turns with a soft, tender expression, the figure worked in warm yellows, greens and blues. Van Gogh reimagined the master’s design entirely in his own glowing colour and feeling brushwork, an image of quiet consolation.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the gentle angel and warm colour keep the tenderness of the original.
Where a gentle figure belongs
Soft and consoling, it suits a bedroom, a study or a living room, and works beautifully against neutral or warm walls.
