Description
Van Gogh’s Portrait of Trabuc, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889, this portrait shows Charles-Elzéard Trabuc, the chief attendant at the Saint-Paul asylum, whom Van Gogh described as a man who had seen much suffering and death. His weathered, watchful face and striped jacket are set against a swirling ground; painted in firm strokes and restrained colour, it is a grave, penetrating portrait of a man Van Gogh came to respect.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the weathered face and steady gaze keep the presence of the original.
Where a portrait belongs
Grave and characterful, it suits a study, a living room or a hallway, and works well against neutral or darker walls.
