Description
Van Gogh’s Dormitory in the Hospital in Arles, hand-painted in oil
Painted in 1889, this shows the long common ward of the Arles hospital where Van Gogh was treated after his breakdown, its rows of curtained beds receding to a stove and a group of patients, all under a high vaulted ceiling. Painted from memory in strong greens, reds and browns with steep perspective, it is a moving, personal record of the place of his suffering, ordered, hushed and strangely dignified.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the long ward and strong colour keep the mood of the original.
Where an interior scene belongs
Its strong, warm tones suit a study, a hallway or a living room, and pair well with wood and considered interiors.
