Description
Van Gogh’s The Shepherdess, after Millet, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889, this is Van Gogh’s coloured ‘translation’ of a figure by Jean-François Millet, the artist he revered above all others. A shepherdess stands wrapped in her cloak beside her flock in a wide field. Van Gogh reimagined Millet’s quiet figure entirely in his own warm yellows, blues and browns, an image of patient watchfulness and the peaceful life of the land.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the shepherdess and warm colour keep the character of the original.
