Description
Van Gogh’s The Stone Bench in the Garden of Saint-Paul Hospital, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in the autumn of 1889, this shows a stone bench beneath the great trees of the asylum garden, their trunks and blazing autumn foliage rising against the sky. Van Gogh painted this enclosed garden many times through his year there; here the mottled trunks, fallen leaves and empty bench are worked in his rhythmic, curling strokes of orange, green and blue, a warm, quietly poignant corner of the garden.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the stone bench and autumn trees keep the feeling of the original.
Where a garden scene belongs
Its warm autumn tones suit a living room, a study or a bright hallway, and pair beautifully with wood, greenery and natural light.
