Description
Van Gogh’s Pieta, after Delacroix, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889, this is Van Gogh’s coloured ‘translation’ of a Pietà by Eugène Delacroix. The Virgin Mary supports the pale, lifeless body of Christ before the tomb, against a stormy sky. One of the few religious subjects Van Gogh painted, made during his own suffering, it is reimagined entirely in his rhythmic strokes and glowing colour, a deeply felt image of grief and compassion.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the mourning figures and glowing colour keep the feeling of the original.
Where a religious scene belongs
Grave and moving, it suits a study, a quiet room or a considered interior, and works well against neutral or warm walls.
