Van Gogh’s The Grove, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Auvers-sur-Oise in the summer of 1890, in the last weeks of his life, this immersive woodland fills the canvas with a stand of tall, slender tree trunks rising from dappled undergrowth, with little sky. Van Gogh loved these all-over, close-up views of the wood; here the vertical trunks and speckled ground are worked in rhythmic strokes of green, violet and gold, cool and full of shifting light.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the tall trunks and dappled light keep the mood of the original.
