Description
Van Gogh’s Still Life with Two Herrings, a Cloth and a Glass, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Paris in 1886, this plain, honest still life lays two herrings on a white cloth beside a glass against a dark ground. The humble herring was a traditional painter’s subject and a wry emblem of the poor artist’s meal; Van Gogh used it to study the silvery sheen of the fish against the bright cloth, painting the simple supper in quick, deft strokes with a grave, sympathetic attention.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the herrings, cloth and glass keep the character of the original.
Where a still life belongs
Plain and characterful, it suits a kitchen, a dining room or a study, and pairs well with wood and warm light.
