Painted in Paris in 1886, this atmospheric scene shows the open, half-rural heights of Montmartre, with fences, a windmill and figures beneath a heavy, darkening sky charged with the coming storm. Van Gogh loved the drama of changing weather over the city’s edge; here the muted greens, greys and violet of the stormy dusk are worked in soft, brooding strokes, a quiet, moody twilight scene.
