Description
Van Gogh’s Lying Cow, hand-painted in oil
Painted in his early Dutch years, around 1883, this study shows a heavy cow lying at rest, its solid body modelled against a plain ground. Based on a study by the old Flemish master Jordaens, whom Van Gogh admired, it reflects his early interest in the animals of the farm and the country. Painted in warm browns and earthy tones, the resting beast has a plain, sculptural weight and calm.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the resting cow and earthy tones keep the character of the original.
Where an animal study belongs
Its warm, earthy tones suit a study, a hallway or a country-style living room, and pair well with wood and warm light.
