Description
Van Gogh’s Peasant Woman, Seated with White Cap, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, this study shows a Brabant peasant woman seated and still in the crisp white bonnet of the region, her weathered face lit against a dark ground. It belongs to the many studies of country people Van Gogh made in the year of The Potato Eaters, the pale cap ringing brightly against the shadow; modelled in deep earth tones, the quiet, seated figure has an honest, dignified presence.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the seated figure and white cap keep the character of the original.
Where a figure study belongs
Grave and characterful, it suits a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and works well against neutral or darker walls.
