Description
Van Gogh’s The Spinner, after Millet, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889, this is Van Gogh’s coloured ‘translation’ of a figure by Jean-François Millet, the artist he revered above all others. A country woman stands at her spinning, drawing out the thread with a patient, absorbed gesture. Van Gogh reimagined Millet’s figure entirely in his own warm yellows, blues and browns, an image of the quiet, patient handcraft of the peasant home.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the spinning figure and warm colour keep the character of the original.
Where a figure study belongs
Its warm, earthy tones suit a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and work well against neutral or warm walls.
