Description
Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, hand-painted in oil
One of the most human images in art, this self-portrait was painted in Arles in January 1889, shortly after the crisis in which Van Gogh cut his own ear. Wrapped in a green overcoat and fur cap, pipe in hand, he faces us steadily against a warm ground, with a Japanese print on the wall behind him. It is unflinching but calm, a portrait of a man taking up his brush again after the worst.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the warm and cool contrasts and the steady, dignified expression keep the honesty of the original.
Where a powerful portrait works
Direct and iconic, it commands a study, a living room, a hallway or a gallery wall, and sits best against plain, warm walls that let the figure hold the space.
