Description
Van Gogh’s Portrait of Patience Escalier, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles in 1888, this portrait shows Patience Escalier, an old Provençal peasant and gardener, his sun-worn face framed by a straw hat. Van Gogh set him against a blazing orange-red ground and painted his features in fierce, glowing colour, wanting to capture ‘the man of the fields’ and the terrible heat of the harvest, one of his most powerful character studies.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the blazing colour and weathered face keep the intensity of the original.
Where a powerful portrait belongs
Bold and characterful, it commands a study, a living room or a hallway, and works best against plain, warm walls.
