Description
Van Gogh’s Wheatfield with a Reaper, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889, Wheatfield with a Reaper shows a single reaper cutting his way through a whole field of swirling golden wheat beneath the hills, the sun blazing above. Van Gogh saw the reaper as an image of humanity and mortality, ‘in this reaper… I see the image of death’, yet painted it in radiant gold, ‘almost smiling’, under a bright sky. It is one of the great, luminous works of his asylum year.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the swirling gold wheat and lone reaper keep the power of the original.
Where a radiant field belongs
Warm and luminous, it anchors a living room, a study or above a sofa, and pairs beautifully with wood, cream walls and warm light.
