Description
Van Gogh’s Evening (after Millet), hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889, Evening (The Watch) is Van Gogh’s warm reworking of a print by Jean-François Millet: a peasant couple sit quietly by the fire at the close of day, the man resting, the woman sewing, a cradle beside them. Van Gogh kept Millet’s tender domestic scene but reimagined it in his own glowing violets and golds, an image of rest, home and quiet companionship.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the firelit couple and warm colour keep the feeling of the original.
Where a warm domestic scene belongs
Homely and tender, it suits a living room, a bedroom or a snug, and pairs beautifully with wood and warm, low lighting.
