Description
Van Gogh’s Portrait of a Peasant, Patience Escalier, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles in 1888, this powerful portrait shows Patience Escalier, an old Provence shepherd and gardener, his sun-burnt face blazing beneath a straw hat against a glowing orange ground. Van Gogh wanted to paint the peasant as a man ‘of the furnace, of the height of harvest, of the south’; here the fiery oranges, blues and the deeply lined face make one of his most intense and monumental portraits.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the blazing colour and weathered face keep the power of the original.
Where a bold portrait belongs
Vivid and arresting, it makes a statement in a living room, a study or a hallway, and works well against neutral or darker walls.
