Description
Van Gogh’s Thistles, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles in 1888, this fresh study shows a clump of wild thistles growing by a dusty roadside, their spiky leaves and purple heads set against the pale ground. Van Gogh found beauty in the toughest roadside weeds, seeing in the hardy thistle something of the endurance of nature under the fierce southern sun; here the greens, silvers and touches of violet are worked in lively, prickling strokes.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the wild thistles and lively strokes keep the freshness of the original.
Where a nature study belongs
Fresh and unusual, it suits a study, a hallway or a living room, and pairs beautifully with wood, greenery and natural light.
