Description
Van Gogh’s Portrait of Armand Roulin, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles in 1888, this striking portrait shows Armand Roulin, the teenage son of Van Gogh’s friend the postman Joseph Roulin, dressed up in a bright yellow jacket and dark felt hat against a green ground. Van Gogh painted the whole Roulin family with real affection; here the bold yellow coat, blue-black hat and the youth’s cool, faraway look make an elegant, memorable portrait.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the yellow jacket and cool gaze keep the presence of the original.
Where a portrait belongs
