Van Gogh’s The Mulberry Tree, hand-painted in oil

Painted at Saint-Rémy in the autumn of 1889, The Mulberry Tree shows a single tree ablaze with brilliant yellow autumn foliage, its twisting branches set against a blue sky above pale rocks. One of Van Gogh’s own favourites, it turns the whole tree into a burst of pure colour and movement, the golden leaves worked in vigorous, curling strokes, a dazzling, joyful image of autumn.
