Description
Van Gogh’s At Eternity’s Gate, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1890, At Eternity’s Gate (also called Sorrowing Old Man) shows a bald, elderly man seated by a fire, his fists pressed to his face in grief. Van Gogh based it on an earlier drawing of a pensioner and reworked it in warm blues and gold; for him it expressed a deep, wordless faith in something beyond, one of the most moving images of human sorrow and hope in his whole work.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the warm colour and quiet grief keep the feeling of the original.
Where a moving figure belongs
Quiet and profound, it suits a study, a living room or a contemplative space, and works best against plain, warm walls.
