Description
Van Gogh’s Basket of Apples, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, this warm still life fills a rough basket with ripe apples, modelled in thick strokes of red, green and gold against a dark ground. It is one of the autumn fruit studies Van Gogh made in his Dutch period, finding real weight and warmth in the plain produce of the country, grounded, generous and honest.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the ripe apples and warm tones keep the character of the original.
Where a fruit still life belongs
Warm and abundant, it suits a kitchen, a pantry or a dining room, and pairs happily with wood and warm light.
