Description
Van Gogh’s Cottage with Peasant Woman Digging, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, this shows a low, thatched Brabant cottage with a peasant woman bent to her digging in the plot before it, under a wide, cloudy sky. Van Gogh loved these humble country dwellings, which he called ‘human nests’, and the hard-working people who lived in them; here the cottage, figure and dark earth are worked together in the warm, sober tones of his Dutch period with a rooted, honest feeling.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the cottage and working figure keep the mood of the original.
Where a country scene belongs
Its warm, earthy tones suit a study, a hallway or a country-style living room, and pair well with wood and warm light.
