Description
Van Gogh’s Gordina de Groot (Study), hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, this head study portrays Gordina de Groot, a young woman of the peasant family whose cottage Van Gogh visited constantly and who appears in The Potato Eaters. Her strong, shadowed face in its dark cap emerges from a deep ground, modelled in the earth tones of his Dutch period with a close, sympathetic attention, one of the memorable faces of his great Nuenen project.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the strong face and earthy tones keep the character of the original.
Where a head study belongs
Grave and characterful, it suits a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and works well against neutral or darker walls.
