Description
Van Gogh’s Head of a Man with a Pipe, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen around 1885, this study shows the weathered face of a country man drawing on a clay pipe, his cap pulled down and his features emerging from a dark ground. It belongs to the long series of peasant heads Van Gogh made in the run-up to The Potato Eaters, modelled in deep browns and greys with sympathy for the hard, honest life written in the face.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the weathered face and earthy tones keep the character of the original.
Where a head study belongs
Grave and characterful, it suits a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and works well against neutral or darker walls.
