Description
Van Gogh’s Head of a Peasant Woman with Dark Cap, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1884, this study shows a Brabant peasant woman in a dark cap, her weathered face lit against a shadowed ground. It is one of the many heads Van Gogh painted in preparation for The Potato Eaters, working to catch the honest character of the country people among whom he lived; the sober earth tones and firm modelling give the face a quiet, dignified presence.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the weathered face and earthy tones keep the character of the original.
Where a head study belongs
Grave and characterful, it suits a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and works well against neutral or darker walls.
