Description
Van Gogh’s Head of a Woman, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, this study shows the broad, weathered face of a Brabant peasant woman in a dark cap, emerging from a shadowed ground. It is one of the many heads of local country people Van Gogh painted in the months around The Potato Eaters, modelled in deep earth tones with a plain, unflinching honesty and real sympathy for the hard life it records.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the weathered face and earthy tones keep the character of the original.
Where a head study belongs
Grave and characterful, it suits a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and works well against neutral or darker walls.
