Description
Van Gogh’s Head of a Woman, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, this is one of the many heads of country people Van Gogh made in preparation for The Potato Eaters. A woman’s weathered face emerges from a dark ground, modelled in deep browns and earthy tones with unflinching honesty. Van Gogh wanted these faces to show real, hard-lived character rather than prettiness, a sombre, powerful study from his Dutch period.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the dark ground and honest face keep the strength of the original.
Where a powerful head study belongs
Grave and characterful, it suits a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and works well against darker or neutral walls.
