Description
Van Gogh’s Head of a Young Peasant with a Pipe, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen around 1884, this study shows a young country worker in a cap, a clay pipe at his lips, his face modelled from a shadowed ground. Van Gogh painted many such heads of the peasants around him in the deep browns and greys of his Dutch period, catching their honest, weather-worn character with real sympathy, a grounded, direct portrait of rural youth.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the young face and earthy tones keep the character of the original.
Where a head study belongs
Quiet and characterful, it suits a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and works well against neutral or darker walls.
