Description
Van Gogh’s L’Arlésienne (1890), hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1890, this is one of the late versions of Van Gogh’s portrait of Marie Ginoux, the café owner of Arles who had become a friend. Based on a drawing by Gauguin, she sits in Provençal dress with books before her, chin on hand, poised and thoughtful. Painted in soft, tender colour, it is a warm tribute made from memory to a woman he admired.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the calm figure and soft colour keep the feeling of the original.
Where a strong portrait belongs
Dignified and warm, it suits a study, a living room, a library or a hallway, and works well against plain, warm walls.
