Description
Van Gogh’s Le Moulin de la Galette, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Paris in 1886, this shows one of the old windmills that still crowned the hill of Montmartre, with its wooden gallery and a scatter of figures on the rise below. Newly arrived in Paris, Van Gogh painted the mill several times as he lightened his palette; here the grey Parisian sky, pale earth and weathered timber are worked in soft, muted tones, a quiet corner of the city he was just discovering.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the old windmill and muted tones keep the mood of the original.
Where a Paris scene belongs
Its soft grey tones suit a study, a hallway or a living room, and pair well with wood and considered interiors.
