Description
Van Gogh’s Morning, Going to Work, after Millet, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in early 1890, this is Van Gogh’s coloured ‘translation’ of a design by Jean-François Millet, the artist he revered above all others. A peasant couple sets out for the fields at dawn, tools on their shoulders, silhouetted against a great rising sun. Van Gogh reimagined Millet’s composition entirely in his own radiant yellows, violets and blues, an image of labour, hope and the start of a new day.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the dawn couple and radiant colour keep the mood of the original.
Where a figure landscape belongs
Its warm, radiant tones suit a living room, a study or a hallway, and pair well with wood and warm light.
