Description
Van Gogh’s Seated Nude, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Paris around 1886, this is one of the academic figure studies Van Gogh made as he trained his hand, most likely in the studio of Fernand Cormon. A seated model is modelled in warm flesh tones against a plain ground, drawn with directness and care rather than idealisation. Nudes are rare in his work, and these study pieces show him learning the discipline of the human figure.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the warm figure and plain ground keep the character of the original.
Where a figure study belongs
Intimate and understated, it suits a study, a bedroom or a considered interior, and works well against plain, warm walls.
