Description
Van Gogh’s Peasant Woman Binding Sheaves, after Millet, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889-90, Peasant Woman Binding Sheaves is one of the series of ‘translations’ Van Gogh made after prints by Jean-François Millet, the painter of peasant life he revered above all others. He kept Millet’s composition, a woman bending to bind sheaves of wheat, but reworked it entirely in his own warm, glowing colour and rolling brushwork, treating the copies not as imitations but as heartfelt versions in a new key, made to keep himself company through his year at the asylum.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the peasant figure and warm colour keep the feeling of the original.
Where a peasant scene belongs
Grounded and warm, it suits a study, a living room, a dining room or a hallway, and pairs beautifully with wood and warm light.
