Description

Van Gogh’s Peasant Woman Bruising Flax, after Millet, hand-painted in oil

Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889-90, Peasant Woman Bruising Flax is one of the series of ‘translations’ Van Gogh made after prints by Jean-François Millet, the painter of peasant life he revered above all others. He kept Millet’s composition, a woman working flax in a barn interior, but reworked it entirely in his own warm, glowing colour and rolling brushwork, treating the copies not as imitations but as heartfelt versions in a new key, made to keep himself company through his year at the asylum.

Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the peasant figure and warm colour keep the feeling of the original.

Where a peasant scene belongs

Grounded and warm, it suits a study, a living room, a dining room or a hallway, and pairs beautifully with wood and warm light.

Choose a hand-painted oil or a fine-art print

Order it as a hand-painted oil for genuine brushwork and impasto relief, finished by an experienced painter and made to order, or as an archival fine-art print for a smooth, even finish at a lower price. Select your size, orientation and framing above; every piece is prepared to your exact specification and inspected before it ships.

The craft

The oil edition of this Van Gogh artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Choose a size and presentation in the options above. Both editions keep the original image proportions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this an original Van Gogh composition?

No. Van Gogh based it on a print by Jean-François Millet, the painter of peasant life he admired above all others. He kept Millet's composition but reworked it in his own warm colour and brushwork at Saint-Rémy in 1889-90.

Why did Van Gogh paint his own version of a Millet print?

He saw these as heartfelt translations rather than copies, a way to work in colour during a period when he could not always paint from life, and they kept him company through his year at the asylum.

What does the painting actually show?

A peasant woman seen from behind, bent forward over a wooden flax brake, gripping a handful of straw-coloured flax. She wears a pale headscarf and a light blue-grey blouse and apron, with bare feet in wooden clogs. A ladder leans against the barn wall behind her, and the ground is scattered with loose flax in warm ochre and gold.

Should I order a hand-painted oil or a fine-art print?

Choose the hand-painted oil if you want real brushwork and impasto texture, applied by a studio artist onto canvas. Choose the archival print for a smooth, even finish at a lower price. Both are made to order in your chosen size.

What size and framing choices do I have?

Sizes are scaled proportionally to the original painting, and you can select rolled canvas, canvas stretched on a chassis, or a thin or thick frame. Every order is prepared to your specification and checked before it ships.
