Description
Van Gogh’s Peasant Woman Darning Stockings, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, this study shows a peasant woman seated and bent to her darning, her hands busy with needle and stocking in the warm gloom of a cottage. Van Gogh painted many such quiet scenes of country women at their household tasks in the year of The Potato Eaters, modelled in the deep browns and greys of his Dutch period; the absorbed figure has a plain, tender intimacy.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the seated figure and warm tones keep the character of the original.
Where a figure study belongs
Its quiet, earthy tones suit a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and work well against neutral or darker walls.
