Description
Van Gogh’s Peasant Woman Peeling Potatoes, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, this study shows a peasant woman seated at her potato-peeling, her hands busy in her lap and her face bent to the task in the warm gloom of a cottage. Van Gogh painted many such scenes of country women at their household work in the year of The Potato Eaters, modelled in the deep browns and greys of his Dutch period; the quiet figure has a plain, tender dignity.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the seated figure and warm tones keep the character of the original.
Where a figure study belongs
Its quiet, earthy tones suit a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and work well against neutral or darker walls.
