Description
Van Gogh’s Peasant Woman, Seated, Half-Figure, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, this close half-figure shows a peasant woman seated and still, her weathered face and heavy shoulders filling the canvas against a dark ground. It is one of the many studies of country people Van Gogh made in the year of The Potato Eaters, drawing near to catch the honest character of his sitters; modelled in deep earth tones, it has a quiet, sculptural presence.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the seated figure and earthy tones keep the character of the original.
Where a figure study belongs
Its quiet, earthy tones suit a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and work well against neutral or darker walls.
