Description
Van Gogh’s Peasant Woman with a Rake, after Millet, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889, this is Van Gogh’s coloured ‘translation’ of a figure by Jean-François Millet, the artist he revered above all others. A country woman stands with her rake, dignified and monumental against a plain ground. Van Gogh reimagined Millet’s figure entirely in his own warm yellows, blues and browns, an image of honest labour and the quiet strength of the peasant.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the standing figure and warm colour keep the character of the original.
Where a figure study belongs
Its warm, earthy tones suit a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and work well against neutral or warm walls.
