Description
Van Gogh’s Pieta, after Delacroix, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889 while he was recovering, Pietà is Van Gogh’s deeply felt reworking of a composition by Delacroix, an artist he revered. The Virgin, arms spread wide, cradles the pale body of the dead Christ before an empty tomb under a turbulent sky. Van Gogh reimagined it entirely in his own swirling blues and golds, some see the red-bearded Christ as a self-identification. It is one of his most moving religious works.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the swirling sky and tender figures keep the feeling of the original.
Where a moving figure scene belongs
Profound and striking, it suits a study, a living room or a contemplative space, and works best against plain, warm walls.
